On Tuesday, March 15, Archbishop Carroll High School had the distinct pleasure of hosting a Pre-JAM Launch of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History’s upcoming 10th annual Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM).

A story incorporating interviews recorded with the women during their visit to Carroll broadcast on WAMU 88.5 FM on All Things Considered on March 22nd. Their visit to Carroll included a musical performance by Carroll students and Q&A session.
The highlight of the morning was the appearance of two of the original members of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, the nation’s first integrated, female big band created in 1937: Willie Mae Wong Scott, 90, the mother of Carroll faculty member Betty Jo Scott, and Helen Jones Woods, 89, mother of Cathy Hughes, founder and chairperson of Radio One, Inc, the largest African-American owned and operated broadcast company in the nation.
We also encourage you to visit the National Museum of American History starting March 29 and throughout April, to view the display of archival material about the Sweethearts and participate in online and public programming to highlight their legacy.
