ENGLISH

Freshmen begin the year with a comprehensive review that stresses grammar, composition and vocabulary skill development. The literature program is built around short stories and poetry, and includes at least one Shakespearian play and a novel. The goal of this program is to send students on to 10th grade with solid reading and writing skills. Developmental reading classes are available for students who need additional review and study skills.

Sophomores, armed with strong grammar and composition skills, plunge into the world of literature. They explore novels, short stories, poetry, drama and non-fiction. Students write papers based on their reading and their life experiences. At the same time, this wide range of reading provides vocabulary and grammar skills enhancement opportunities that prepare them for the very important PSAT that all students take in 11th grade. A course in developmental language arts is available to students who would benefit from additional reading and writing practice.

Juniors at Carroll are firmly focused on the SAT. American literature, examined from a literary and historical perspective, is coordinated with United States history classes so students understand how and why each period of U.S. History forms the background for the development of the literature of that time. Vocabulary study is intensified and classes focus on preparation for the SAT. Juniors participate in English sponsored activities such as the school newspaper, yearbook, literary magazine, and the Drama Club.

British literature, term papers, extensive SAT preparation, and a plethora of outside reading make up a senior program aimed at preparing students for the rigors of college. Carroll seniors learn responsibility and the value of initiative in these English classes. Top seniors may apply for acceptance into the Advanced Placement program, for which they may earn college credit. Carroll seniors graduate with the skills, confidence and desire to meet the challenges of college and the world of work.
