SCIENCE
The major thrust of the Science Department is to offer to students an appreciation of the sciences through a demanding laboratory and technically oriented program. The establishment of experimentation as the basis of the science program encourages students to develop science projects, and participate in competitive national and citywide programs, while learning fundamental concepts in sequential science courses.
Students contemplating careers in the sciences are encouraged and guided to select course offerings that are relevant to their projected future. Students are required to complete successfully three credits of science to graduate from Archbishop Carroll High School.
In keeping with the Carroll tradition of excellence, the Science Department is embarking on projects to expand the horizons of each student. With this in mind, we are active participants in the following lecture/demonstration programs that introduce students to the state-of-the-art technological procedures utilized in science:
The American Heart Association High School Research Program
The Carnegie Institute of Washington Capital Science Lecture Series
Catholic University - Discovery Center
CU-3: A High School Outreach Workshop
The Department of Agriculture Research Apprenticeship Program
Junior Engineering Technical Society
Mae Jemison Science Summer Residential Program
Minorities in Science and Technology
National Institute of Health Science Academy
The Role Models and Leaders Project
Structured Intern Program: Mechanical Systems Division Goddard Space Flight Center
Trinity College Women in Science
Science students are encouraged to participate in many competitions. The science faculty encourages success in these activities; however, competitions are always looked upon as academic learning experiences. Students participate in the following competitions:
The Science Bowl - Department of Energy
The Dupont Challenge - A Science Essay Awards Program
The Foundation for Scholastic Advancement
National Science Olympiad
The Tandy Scholars Program
Summer Enrichment Science Journal
The Science Journal is designed to:
- Aid students in developing an understanding and an appreciation for current scientific accomplishments that are useful for daily living.
- Reinforce science concepts and skills learned in the academic school year.
- Improve and enhance preparation of academic skills for the next school year.
- Awaken and develop creative thinking skills in the area of career development.
