THE WILLIAM G. McGOWAN LEARNING CENTER

The William G. McGowan New Learning Center, dedicated on December 5, 1996, now consists of state of the art Pentium computers all linked in a hybrid local area network (LAN) via Windows NT Server. All computers have the Windows operating system with full TCP/IP capabilities and the complete Microsoft Office Professional Edition.

The McGowan lab is a small part of a wide area network (WAN) which encompasses the computers in every department of every building on campus. Its creation has been made possible in part due to the generosity of the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund, Inc., The Catholic University of America, Compucel Services, and Cisco Systems, Inc.

With our new high-end NT Advanced Server (NTAS), graciously donated by The Catholic University of America School of Engineering, all of these computers, as well as all other computers on the network, have access to the World Wide Web using Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Explorer.

While the Internet Computer Laboratory focusses on mathematics and science, the Learning Center Computer Laboratory focuses on writing, social science and business. We have an After School Study Program from 3:00PM to 4:00PM Monday through Thursday, where students are allowed to use the Internet for research in various fields to aid in the writing of term papers and reports.
